Firefox GYB Matters

So, it's been awhile since we blogged... but many interesting things have happened!

1) We got hacked 3 times last week!

Some of our regular visitors may have noticed that on several days last week, it seemed like we were close to reaching our target of completing the logo! ;) In fact, we received a few phone calls from really excited folks who thought that we had tipped and created a super-viral site.

Unfortunately, it wasn't that we had an avalanche of visitors to our site (I wished we did), but more that we had a web-savvy visitor who hacked into our site and generated close to 12,000 new pixels.

That was indeed a thrill for us, to know that someone cared enough to hack into our site!

So here is an open appeal to the Hacker from Brazil :

We would love to have you join the Firefox GYB team! We appreciate talent, and we'd like to invite you to be a part of our project to spread Firefox among non-Firefox users. At present, we have a group of volunteers who have expressed interest in helping us develop, maintain and work on the site... they are a great bunch of people, but we're always open to more help! So Hacker from Brazil , if you'd like to take us up on our offer, please email us at firefoxgotyourback@gmail.com.

2) We made it to the top 10 Google searches

Congratulations! The Google bots have finally caught on to our site, and now when you search for "firefox got your back", we generate at least the top 15 sites on Google search. Wow wee.

:)

3)My Friendly Fox

You may have noticed that we added a new button to our page! Some of our fellow d.schoolers have created a pretty cool EBay toolbar for Firefox users! If you like Ebay, and you want a better Ebay experience, download Firefox by clicking the yellow button on our page (or just below!), and head over to get the EBay toolbar from My Friendly Fox!

Firefox 2

Kudos to their team for creating such an awesome extension in a span of 7 days.

Alright, that's it for this week's weekly update. Check back for some new exciting developments that will be hitting GYB some time soon!

Introducing... the FoxKeh Cursor

After receiving feedback from our many users, we decided to make it easier to help fellow users find their friends on the logo in the form of a furry buddy search cursor (i.e. Foxkeh!)

How it works:

When you search for a friend using our search bar, Foxkeh will bring, and actually point you to the location of your friend on the huge logo!

Try it, have fun, tell a friend!

Spiffy New Buttons

Thanks to the help of a super web developer Ivo, we now have some spiffy new buttons that you can place on your website or blog to link to Who's Got Your Back!

Pick the one you like best and share your pixel profile with friends + family!

Random post of the day: Who are we?

Firefox must be something cool if we're....

Passionate enough to stick Firefox Who's Got Your Back prints on our backs!

The Law of Exponential Doubling

What a pleasant surpise.

We go to bed at 460 pixels, and wake up to 1306 pixels.

Who said that the law of exponential doubling only applied to bacteria??

Day 5. Back from the Dead.

After the overwhelming response + crash we experienced last night, our website was up and running again in the morning thanks to the IT Whiz Kid... Nathan!

Some stats from Google Analytics:
Visits: 3,060
Pageviews: 5,635

In addition, we have finally made it to the top 250 list on Spread Firefox! Right now, we are #243 on the list, which is a phenomenal success considering the site has only been up for ~ 4 days!

We've also received amazing support from our visitors + other Firefox users. Check out some of the uber cool plugs that we have landed on several blogs/websites:

1) Metacool (Diego's blog)

"After just two weeks of work, CIA-KGB students launched their solutions to help Mozilla attract and retain users of Firefox. Actually, it wasn't really two weeks -- it was eight working days and four weekend days. As you'll see by clicking through on the URL's, below, each team of four students accomplished an incredible amount of work. When was the last time you went from zero knowledge in a subject area to putting something real and working in to the world in just two weeks? While working the equivalent of three or four other full-time jobs? I'm amazed."

2) Firefox Bolivia

Our Spanish friends dedicated a post to us, which thrilled us immensely! We even tried translating the text to figure out what they said!

3) Firefox Facts
Thanks to Mitch Keeler for blogging about us on his website! Mitch, you are the man! :)

4) Foxie Wire

The folks at Foxie Wire were kind enough to nominate us as a cool link, and we have thus far received 2 votes! ;)

5) Mozilla Links

"As you can see some of them appeal to a specific market segment while others (Everyday Hero and Got Your Back) appeal to a broader audience offering a medium for people to express themselves while introducing Firefox.
Good to see these new approaches and even better to be able to see their development."

4 days. 222 Spots Taken. 2862 Pageviews. And...

And the website crashes.
Yes sir, the logo can't take no more hits
It's gone in ghost mode!

Interestingly check out the screenshot below from our Google analytics. A truely international set of claimers of spots on the logo! WOW!

I say congrats to us all :)
